Johnson's Characteristics

By reading through Johnson’s dictionary, I discovered that Johnson actually put some personal feelings and opinions in his work. For instance, the word “dull”, he not only put down the basic definition, but also he wrote down a sentence, “To make dictionaries is dull work.” This I believe shows his sense of humor. Moreover, he wrote a “hateful” tax levied upon commodities for excise’s definition. As for the other word, to period, he wrote down “a bad word” after the definition. I believe these two examples show that Johnson added his personal feelings to different words in his dictionary. It also shows that he’s being subjective to some particular vocabularies. From this discovery, I think Samuel Johnson is a person who is willingly to state his own opinions in the public and his works. In addition, there’s no doubt that Johnson is an intellectual person, because to create a dictionary is not an easy task. Just like what Samuel Johnson wrote, “making dictionaries is dull work.”
