What Does Love Do To You?

Some says love can provide energy to a person, boost him accomplish impossible goals. Some says love can turn into a sharp weapon that can hurt you critically. Love is a force of nature. However, we cannot command or demand love. Love is unpurchasable. It cannot be bought, sold, or traded. You cannot make someone love you, nor can you prevent it. For instance, I have a friend who lost his way because of love. He fell in love with a girl and he thought that she will be his fate one forever. Nevertheless, things did not go well and it is even worse than he thought originally. That girl fell in love with another boy and decided to break up with him. This news gave him a humongous impact. Since that day, he lost weight continuously, he doesn’t pay attention in class anymore, and he even thought about ending his life. It took him several months to recover. Thus, I believe that love can become either advantage or disadvantage to a person. That depends on what the situation is. In the advantage, a person will feel everything is easy for him/her, and nothing can defeat him/her as long as there is love between the lovers. In the disadvantage, probably nothing will be relevant to that person. Without love, it would be pointless for living.

Poetry Recital Reflection

Before I even stand in front of the classroom to present my poetry recital, my hands and legs are already shaking. Moreover, when I heard Mr. Dahl shouted out the order, I was even more nervous, because I was the third. Did I feel nervous because I was not fully prepared? The answer is no. I’ve already finished my preparation long time ago. Nevertheless, when I stand in front of everyone, inside my brain is blank. I can remember nothing. It felt really strange because when I was practicing the recital along, I felt pretty easy. When one does a speech in front of many people, he/she is extremely sensitive. It is really simple for the presenter to notice the actions from the audiences under the stage. Any tiny movements can cause the presenter to feel even more nervous and forget what he/she trying to say originally.
When I was presenting today, I keep trying to memorize the poem as much as I could. Although I did not present a perfect recital, I think that was still a fantastic experience for me. However, due to my whole concentration was on memorizing the poem, so I forgot to put emotions and pauses, which was a pity, while I was reciting. Yet, when I was reciting, except the poem’s text, all I wanted to do is finish this task and go back to my seat; because my sweat already came out like flood. Some students forgot few lines today, but I think everyone enjoyed this assignment. I hope I will have another opportunity for this kind of assignment, which enhances my public speaking skills greatly.

The Fall of Satan (Paraphrase)

Line 128 – 155

My lord, under you command, we sent Seraphim to lead other angles against God position, which upheld by strength, change, or fate. This battle can demonstrate Satan’s supreme power.  Beezlebub said that he saw this dreadful event, which we have been defeated and thrown to hell. Although our happy and glory are swallowed up by dark, we still have invincible spirit and mind. If God wanted us to stay in hell work as slaves and suffers pain and wrath. Then we will suffer eternal punishment with invincible mind.

Line 157 – 191

Satan replied, “Being weak is miserable.” No matter what we do, we will never do anything good. Evil, which makes us delight, is the only thing we are searching for. This makes God stressed and disturbs his plans. If God wants to do something good, then we will use evil to fight them back and prevent them from happening. We will bring storm, mess, fury, and violence. Anything related to evil to enrage God. We need to find more ways to attack and insult God.

Song: To Celia (Paraphrase)

Line 1~4
The speaker expresses her love by gazing at him. Yet, he wants more than an expression of love. He wants a pledge from his lady with her own eyes. If she kisses the cup, he will be happy to kiss it too and forget about the wine.
Line 5~8
His soul is thirsts for love, and only a drink of divine can satisfy him. The kiss of the lady is more than the nectar of the Gods. The lady is like goddess to him.
Line 9~12
The purpose of sending the lady the rosy wreath is not to honor her beauty. It gave him a hope that the wreath will never wither when the lady is wearing it.
Line 13~16
If you breathe on the wreath and send it back to me. I can swear that, as long as it grows, the smell will not come from the wreath, it will come from you.

How Does Death Dies?

For first question, everyone dies in the sonnet. However, they believed in after life, so after one passed away, one will not die again in the other world. Second question can be explained in first question. One will not die again in the after life. Therefore, Death does not exist.

Questions in Big Book

How do our hearts and minds influence our actions?

In some circumstances, one’s decision will always follow his/her heart. Nevertheless, sometimes what is more convincing is the influence of people and events. Take myself as an example. When I hang out with my friends to buy new clothes, I might choose a jacket, which has shining decorations on it, to buy. However, when your friends see me holding that jacket. Their opinions might soon appear. For instance, “Hey, don’t you think that jacket is too fancy?” That is only a simple sentence, yet it can bring a strong influence on your decision. When some people received that, they may stand on his/her point immediately and no one could move the decision. Nevertheless, as for me, I would accept my friends’ opinions and put the jacket back to its original position. Therefore, I believed that what really influence our hearts and minds are voices and opinions from others.

When people have a close bond, can they even really be separated – even by death?

I believe people can be separated. Yet, what I meant for this is physically. Take John Donne’s poem as an example. In A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, it talks about the husband has to leave the wife for work, so the wife has to stay at home and wait till her husband return. However, John Donne describes that their relationship will still like a compass in the end. What it means is that although two people are far apart, their love is still connected; even by death, if they have a close bond. There are examples in reality that a wife died, and the husband is alone. What the husband thinks is that his wife is his true love, there will be no one can replace her. So, even though she has passed away, the husband still misses her. These examples demonstrate that two people can actually be segregated; nevertheless, the love between them is actually tightly bounded, even by death.

Literary Skill : Allusion

In reality, mermaids are myth or imaginary object. Things that do not exist in real world. However, mermaids often used to describe women that are glamorous or beauteous. Therefore, "Mermaids singing that lure sailors to crash their ships." It alludes that beautiful and attractive women can grab the attention of mens. When mens focus has been disrupted by lovely women, they might lose their accomplishments.

In the poem, "Song" by John Donne. He talks about things that impossible to achieve in the first few lines. For instance"Go and catch a falling star" or "Teach me to her mermaid singing" These are things that cannot be accomplished. He then use these examples to illustrate that finding a women that is perfect in beauty, and trustworthy is really difficult. In the end, he says that by the time she write you a letter, that is the time she is not pure and true.
