Literary Skill : Allusion

In reality, mermaids are myth or imaginary object. Things that do not exist in real world. However, mermaids often used to describe women that are glamorous or beauteous. Therefore, "Mermaids singing that lure sailors to crash their ships." It alludes that beautiful and attractive women can grab the attention of mens. When mens focus has been disrupted by lovely women, they might lose their accomplishments.

In the poem, "Song" by John Donne. He talks about things that impossible to achieve in the first few lines. For instance"Go and catch a falling star" or "Teach me to her mermaid singing" These are things that cannot be accomplished. He then use these examples to illustrate that finding a women that is perfect in beauty, and trustworthy is really difficult. In the end, he says that by the time she write you a letter, that is the time she is not pure and true.
